The Academy of Medicine recommends breastfeeding at first intention in newborns and infants. This should be exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months or at least the last 4 month.

Why exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months is recommended?
The benefits of breastfeeding are extensive and are found in children, adults in the future and also in the mother.
In addition to the development and growth, breastfeeding confers protection against gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. Exclusive breastfeeding for at least 4 months would have a preventive effect on allergies. Breast milk also helps prevent future obesity, type 1 diabetes in children and cardiovascular disease in adults.
For the mother, breastfeeding facilitates the return of layers, weight loss, reduces the risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer and promotes harmony of mother-child relationship, which helps prevent abuse.
