Breastfeeding: good for baby and for Mom!
Author: internet Published date: 2009-05-27

Food is essential to the development of the infant, but also plays a role in the onset of certain diseases in children and adults. But nutrition is the ideal exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months, only 15% of newborns receive. The Academy of Medicine has issued recommendations incentives to breastfeeding, including an extension of maternity leave for women who choose to breastfeed.

Milk inimitable

The Academy of Medicine recommends breastfeeding at first intention in newborns and infants. This should be exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months or at least the last 4 month.

To encourage women to make that choice, the Academy is going to propose to government to extend the post-maternity leave at 4 or 6 months for women who choose to put their child within.

It must be said that breastfeeding in France is very low. Currently in France, only 15% of infants are exclusively breastfed until 6 months, against 80% for example in Scandinavian countries.

Why exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months is recommended?

The benefits of breastfeeding are extensive and are found in children, adults in the future and also in the mother.

In addition to the development and growth, breastfeeding confers protection against gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. Exclusive breastfeeding for at least 4 months would have a preventive effect on allergies. Breast milk also helps prevent future obesity, type 1 diabetes in children and cardiovascular disease in adults.

For the mother, breastfeeding facilitates the return of layers, weight loss, reduces the risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer and promotes harmony of mother-child relationship, which helps prevent abuse.
Recommendations were also made in case of failure of breastfeeding.

- Use only for infant formulas based on cow milk standards are governed by the French and European regulations. They must be given up to the age of 1 year.

- Cow's milk (UHT) whole or semi skimmed milk should never be used before the age of 1 year (it is too rich in protein, iron and essential fatty acids).

- The hypoallergenic milk or soy formulas' have no place in infant feeding normal 'states the Academy. The first do no nutritional advantage compared to conventional infant formulas, whereas the latter do not provide protective effect against allergy to cow's milk protein or infections.
