The sun, the sea, a libido climbing, meet new people. Holiday sex change! But what about contraception, women adapt it to this summer often synonymous with greater sexual activity? To answer this question, the international survey Loving Summer Survey focused on women's sexuality during the holidays in general, their attitudes toward contraception and protection against STIs in particular. More than 5 700 women aged 16 to 40 years in 10 countries participated in the survey conducted in August and September 2005 by Harris Interactive on behalf of Organon.
Sexuality more ...
The investigation proves: romantic relationships - and sexual - are part of the holiday. Thus, for 51% of women, the possibility of a romantic relationship or a moment of physical intimacy is important holidays. And this hope is expressed: almost half of women (47%) claim to be more sexually active on holiday, 37%, sex is more satisfying in the summer than the rest of the year.
... Not without risk
If women admit to having sexual activity increased during the summer, few of them adapt their control according to this reality, 84% of them do not reconsider their need in this area on the eve of holidays. More worryingly, 15% of women who had an adventure one evening during their holidays have used any method of contraception, 27% had used no contraception mechanical (condoms) to protect themselves from STIs.
I forget all holidays
The survey also revealed problems inherent in the use of the pill. Jet lag, delayed sleep habits upside down ... all of which distort our daily benchmarks and promote the forgotten pill. Thus, 52% of users admit to having missed a pill during their holidays, with 73%, the French are among the most stunning. In addition, only a minority take the necessary measures (abstinence, emergency contraception, condoms) to avoid an unwanted pregnancy.
Know very little
These behaviors are certainly at risk of carelessness, but a real ignorance about the proper use of the pill. Thus, the Summer Loving Survey showed that 15% of women were unaware that they must adjust the time to take pill for jet lag. Another example: the vacation is often synonymous with gastrointestinal problems (vomiting ...) or taking certain medications. Or 82% of French do not know that these disorders can affect the effectiveness of the pill.
Some tips
- Plan, ideally 2 to 3 months before departure, the holiday for contraception.
- Careful not to store condoms and sunscreen in the same kit, and oil based products can damage latex
- In case of jet lag, keep a watch to time the country of origin in order to more easily calculate the new time control. If it falls in the middle of the night, it's safer to move the time of the retreat.
- Always start with emergency contraception: a plate and more (in case of lost luggage, for example) and, ideally, condoms, the only way to protect themselves from STIs with a new partner.
- In case of unprotected sex with a new partner, consult a physician for the return of holiday STIs, few or no symptoms, often goes unnoticed.
