Elderly care need not be a burden
Author: internet Published date: 2011-07-11

There has been a lot in the news recently about care for the elderly, both concerning the current state of the care system and warning about how stretched the system will be, if it exists at all, in the future.

Should we take a leaf out of our global neighbours' books and think about revisiting the model of the extended family? Three generations living under one roof? Many other nations do this without any trouble.

The fact is, we have been conditioned to move out of home, to create a place of our own and it's all to avoid 'being a burden'.

Young people crave independence but also do not want to be a burden to their parents. Years go by and then the reverse happens: elderly relatives refuse to become a burden on their family by moving in with them.

It need not be this way. Elderly people can still lead full and enriching lives in their own homes. Home care for the elderly has come on in leaps and bounds. It is now an extremely popular option which prolongs dignity, independence and a good quality of life.

There are organisations who can arrange care programmes as per your loved one's requirements, giving them a say in their own care and respecting their wishes. This can be as intensive as they desire, to include medical assistance or personal care with washing and dressing.

Alternatively, it could mean engaging someone to help just with the weekly shopping or providing a lift and a sturdy arm to enable a visit to town or a local place of interest.

There are also clubs that the elderly can join, keeping them social and active. In a change from the usual tea dances, coffee mornings and bingo, T'ai Chi is currently very popular, providing gentle exercise which keeps the body and mind supple.

One of the easiest ways to ensure your elderly loved one feels cared for and is happy is to simply stay in touch. Visit them regularly and call when you can't see them.

Remember that this person has looked after you while in your childhood, don't they deserve your care in return?
