Reading among children, a tool to detect myopia

A study of young children confirms the role of working closely and family history in the development of myopia. This result, based particularly on the number of books read per week, offers the means to detect persons at risk.

A Singapore team has studied the possible relationship between the activity of reading, as witness the work closely, family history and the occurrence of myopia in more than 1,000 young children aged 7 to 9 years. Among children reading more than two pounds per week they are 14% to present a moderate to severe myopia, whereas this proportion is only 5% of children reading less than two pounds weekly. Family history of myopia in both parents are found in 24% and 10% of cases, respectively in children reading more than two pounds and less than two pounds per week.
Even in the absence of cause and effect, this work provides the means for early detection of subjects at risk of developing this type of visual disturbance.
