Angioma, wine stain
Author: internet Published date: 2009-06-07

They are common: a baby in ten has one or more spots on the skin, sometimes tiny, sometimes larger. But in most cases, the angiomas are benign and regress spontaneously.

A few millimeters to several centimeters, or flat terrain, light pink to dark red, the angiomas often adorn the faces of babies, or any other body part. They are due to malformations of tiny blood vessels (capillaries). Mostly benign, they spontaneously disappear without trace.

Three types of angiomas are distinct.

The naevus flammeus
Red salmon, this angiomas present at birth is often accompanied by another stain on the neck or the hairline. It requires no treatment and usually disappears during the first months of life (before ten months in most cases).

Angiomas Tuberosum
Rounded appearance and dark red in color, it appears a few months after birth, grows a little, then resolves itself to the age of two or three years.
But attention, if it appears angioma at the front, near the mouth or eyelid, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist to avoid any risk of complication. Thus, it is sometimes recommended to remove these stains around the age of 12 months.

Angiomas plan or 'wine stain'
This flat and uniform stain pink or red is usually at birth on the face or neck. Unlike the other angiomas, it does not disappear spontaneously. If there are problems aesthetic, you can use a treatment with pulsed dye laser. However, it may be preferable to consider this treatment during adolescence, because it requires five or six sessions of half an hour, spread over one or two years. In addition, the intervention is quite painful and requires general anesthesia among toddlers, without certainty that the stains disappear completely. It must weigh the advantages and disadvantages.
