According to a European study, students in schools located near a major airport have more learning difficulties, particularly in the acquisition of understanding of written language.

More than 2,800 children, aged 9 or 10 years and enrolled in a school located near an international airport, were evaluated. They spent the cognitive tests and answered a questionnaire to determine their general health. Noise pollution school was also measured.
The authors observed an inverse relationship between intensity noise and student performance. Noise pollution causes includingdisorders of learning to read. Where it is most intense, children can read but do not they read. Meanwhile, students report that the noise tends to irritate.
However, it does not seem to affect their level of attention, or their general health.

How to explain this phenomenon?

It is likely that children are protected from noisementally in isolationthis nuisance. They manage to ignore the noise of aircraft coming from outside, but also those coming from inside. They would then be less attentive to what happens in their class, and in particular the voice of their teacher.

We consider that to be heard, the way the teacher mustexceed 10db noise. In some schools, the sound of the ventilation or produced by the students themselves, sufficient to hide the words of the teacher, especially since the seats at the back of the class. A noisy area, as close to an airport, also makes obsolete the 10db rule, unless you install sound insulation system specific.
