The end of immunostimulatory treatments

Before the winter, hundreds of thousands of French, mostly children and elderly, have a 'cure immune' to strengthen their defenses against winter infections (tonsillitis, bronchitis, nasopharyngitis ...). These drugs, consisting of bacterial antigens targeted immunostimulants, will disappear from the market as of 24 October 2005: Biostim, Imocur, Imudon, IRS 19 and Ribomunyl.

The so called immunostimulants have never proven their effectiveness, whileside effects rare, but serious(urticaria, allergy), were documented. Consequently, their withdrawal from the contract will be effective October 24.
The decision follows a reassessment of the benefit / risk balance of these specialties, in terms of efficiency criteria currently required and data from pharmacovigilance. The conclusion is firm'Efficiency and mechanism of the therapeutic claims are not proven'. In addition, 'side effects rare but potentially serious, mainly arising from allergic or skin, have been highlighted.
In practice, the Agency recommends that patients with these drugs were prescribedcontact, without urgency, with their doctorto review their care. And in anticipation of the contact, not to start a new cure. And if a cure is ongoing, there is no obligation to stop it.
Note by the Agency regarding the treatment of recurrent infections
- In children, infections ORL and recurrent respiratory mostly viral, self-limiting and contribute to strengthening the immune learning. As such, they are essentially a symptomatic care.
- In adults, prevention must focus on the care of individual factors favoring these infections (allergy, gastro-esophageal reflux) and environmental (passive smoking).
